Netherlands-based maker [Streetfire_Industries] has designed a cool 3D printable lamp shaped like a pinecone. The lamp, which was designed in Solidworks and which can be downloaded from Thingiverse, has a standard E14 bulb connection.

Pinecones, those weird and wonderful woody fruits of pine trees, have inspired many things: art, sculptures, and even the name of a gland in your brain. (That would be the pineal gland, of course, so-called because of its formal similarity to a pinecone.)

These days, pinecones are also inspiring cool home decor, as shown by this brilliant 3D printed lamp made by Netherlands-based maker [Streetfire_Industries]. The glowing lighting fixture would make a great addition to any quirky or futuristic living space, and can be downloaded for free via Thingiverse.

The free 3D printable lamp was designed by [Streetfire_Industries] using Dassault Systèmes’ Solidworks CAD software. The 3D design process consisted of some initial sketches, followed by digital modeling of the “leaf” shape and arranging multiple copies of that shape in a circular pattern.

It’s totally functional, too: the 3D printed lamp is designed to fit a standard E14 lightbulb (the more colorful, the better), and the connecting part is uploaded as a step file in order to be modified fo other bulb types.

Part of the reason for the high-quality look of this print might have something to do with the maker’s experience in this field. A couple of years ago, [Streetfire_Industries] uploaded a fairly similar design for a Flowerlamp, another nature-inspired piece of 3D printed homeware.

The pinecone lamp is arguably even better, and wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi movie or a show-home for a top architect. We can imagine a whole set of them fitted with different-colored bulbs would look especially cool.

In terms of how you print the organic-looking 3D printed lamp, the designer suggests going with white PLA to maximize the glow of the bulb, printing at 0.2 mm layer height with 10 percent infill. The model consists of three separate sections which can be connected after printing.
