If you just get started and have a thought of building a 3D printer, The Printrbot Simple might be the right product for you. The Printrbot Simple (beta) is described as "an exercise in 3d printing minimalism. It includes only what is needed to get started in the world of 3D printing."

But for another $100 you get a real printer. with a usable print bed area. I do not see the point.

They still have a way to go. You can get a kit with a heated bed for that
