Materialise has launched its TRUMATCH Personalized Solutions Shoulder System, which will help orthopedic surgeons prepare for shoulder arthroplasty surgery using 3D printed guides and a virtual pre-planning environment.

Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA) and Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) operations are two of the trickiest procedures when it comes to shoulder problems. In each case, a tiny incision must be made by the surgeon, but the size of this incision reduces visibility—the Glenoid cavity being deep in the surgical window and a lack of reliable landmarks making the procedure even more difficult.
These procedures will always be tough, but with the addition of pre-surgical planning tactics, doctors can at least know what to expect from their patient from the outset. And with the new TRUMATCH Personalized Solutions Shoulder System from Materialise, pre-surgical planning becomes much clearer.
The new Materialise medical system allows surgeons to order patient-specific 3D printed shoulder guides and access a virtual planning environment within an all-in-one, web-based platform. Materialise says the TRUMATCH system carries out implant positioning within a stable reference frame that is linked to the entire scapula, using reliable landmarks that are not subject to case-specific wear patterns.
This, Materialise says, allows the surgeon to be more precise in the alignment of the implant and screw positioning, which in turn improves fixation.

The new TRUMATCH Personalized Solutions Shoulder System has been developed alongside DePuy Synthes, a medical device company owned by Johnson & Johnson, and was recently unveiled at the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons) Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Previous TRUMATCH solutions developed by Materialise and DePuy Synthes have included 3D printed facial and skull implants, while Materialise’s Mimics Innovation Suite is widely used by orthopedic professionals.
