Today at Euromold we spoke with Ruun Rouleaux about his ColorFabb filaments. ColorFabb is a brand of the Helian Polymers company which specialized in additives for plastics and polymers located in Venlo, The Netherlands.
ColorFabb has several interesting items to show:
- ColorFabb Woodfill / wood filament printing on the Makerbot and Ultimaker
- New ColorFabb PLA / PHA filaments on transparent spools
- ColorFabb _XT colpolyester transparent tough materials
1. ColorFabb's WoodFill filaments come in 2.85mm and 1.75mm and have a processing temperature of 195~230C. What makes this wood filament special is its unique composition, its availability on a spool, and the service and expertise with which Ruun and his colleagues support their products.
The price for WoodFill Coarse/Fine is €40 (€48.40 incl. Tax) / Spool (750 grams).
The 3D prints even smell like wood.
2. ColorFabb also has a filament which is a mixture of PLA and PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates). This mixture produces a tough, durable filament which bends where other filament break. As an added bonus, this filament is available in a variety of colors.
3. The _XT filament by ColorFabb range is a special amorphous copolyester with a Tg of 75 C. So you can use this up to 70 degrees C. It is extra transparent, extra tough, and extra temperature resistant. In addition, ColorFabb _XT is odorless compared to ABS.
In comparison, the normal PLA / PHA range has a elongation of approx 10% at yield, but has very good layer adhesion properties and is a bit softer compared to PLA. Both qualities have minimum warping tendencies.
The _XT-300 is priced at €29.65 / Spool (min. 750 grams) Incl. Tax.
Finally, Ruud told us about some of his current projects which include work on a filament containing particles of real silver. The silver gives prints an attractive shimmer and promises to be an interesting material for designers. This new filament will be launched in February 2014. Next year the company will also introduce a new filament which could withstand temperatures up to 100C that you can make coffee cup and drink from it. It will be FDA compliant and dishwasher safe.
