The Nanyang Additive Manufacturing Centre (NAMC) in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is organizing the first of its kind, Singapore International 3D Printing Competitions. NAMC organizers are inviting everyone worldwide to take part in this event this year. Starting from 1st of August, participants are welcome to send their 3D printed parts to NAMC.

The first is design of a 3D printed abacus. An abacus is a traditional manual calculator that has existed thousands of years. Using just beads and rods, it can be used to count, add, subtract, multiply and more! NAMC is seeking a design for an abacus meant to showcase the historical and engineering excellence of this device. The design must be 3D printable and should not measure more than 25x25x25 centimeters volume.

The second is fashion designs which are "water-inspired" women or men outerwear clothing, tops, bottoms or dresses. Accessories are excluded though. NTU will develop Five Peaks of Excellence namely Sustainable Earth, New Media, Future, Healthcare, New Silk Road and Innovation Asia. Sustainable Earth is identified as the "peak of peaks" under the Five Peaks of Excellence. NTU takes a comprehensive approach to water issues and takes up leadership position in environment and water technologies research.

"In this competition, we seek attractive fashion designs which are water-inspired, created using 3D printing technologies, to embody the spirit of sustainable earth. The design must be printable and ready to wear. The 3D printed fashion piece must be a conversation starter as well as bring out the flavour of 3D printed fashion!" writes NAMC.

Both competitions only accept 3D printed physical part as submission. The entry package should contain the followings:

  1. 3D Printed physical part for submission
  2. A description of your design in less than 200 words (in English), printed on a A4 size paper.
  3. A printed and signed Registration Form.
  4. A CD containing the softcopy of the design, the description and the registration form.

NAMC organizers will select one winning design for each competition that each comes with a grand prize of S$10,000 (USD8,000) each! The deadline of this competition is 01 Nov 2013. The result will be announced by 07 Dec 2013.

More details can be found on NAMC website.

who will put time and effort into designing an entry, only for their idea to be "owned" by the competition organiser ( read the TnCs) More endeavors to shut down the opensource community in the name of education and promotion of 3D printing. Sucks
