Expecting couples often can get an ultrasound scan and a black-and-white printout showing what their future child is going to look like. With 3D printing, you can now 3D print your very own fetus sculptures.

Korean startup 3D Story Corp. announced Wednesday that it has started to offer 3D printed fetus for young parents based on ultrasound scan data. The company has developed a software program that automatically converts 3D ultrasound data into a 3D model and ready for 3D printing. This technology is currently patent-pending.

3D Story Corp. is not the first company to offer 3D printed fetus. In August 2012 Japanese medical 3D printing firm Fasotec comes up with a service of "Shape of an Angel", providing a 3D printed miniature of a belly baby based on MRI data. And earlier this year, another company, 3D Babies, announced that it will use your 3D/4D ultrasound or newborn baby pictures to create a virtual 3D model of your baby and then transform that model into a life-sized sculpture using a 3D printer. The 3D printed fetus will either come with a box or a wood frame.

3D Story said that its 3D graphic program is unique and the 3D model generated from 3D ultrasound of the fetal looks just like the live fetus. 3D Story has signed an agreement with HyVision System that will supply Cubicon 3D printers for its 3D printing service.

The South Korean government has been seeking new opportunity to create more jobs by promoting the country's 3D printing industry. On Wednesday it announced that is drawing up a 10-year plan to promtoe and develop 3D printing technology. It plans also to train 10 million South Koreans including students and future entrepreneurs on 3D printing by 2020, and will provide 3D printers at 227 libraries and 5,885 schools by 2017.

My niece who lost her first child at 8 months would so love ❤ to have something like this. This is so amazing for people who have lost a baby too soon.

"How is this any worse than places that offer image and video services of your unborn child?" Fetus imaging is also tacky. No one but the parents really want to look at a fetus. Maybe this service IS better because no one can e-mail me a 3-D printed fetus.

I just knew this was coming! Horrible and tacky, but inevitable.
