Naked Labs, a Silicon Valley health and wellness startup, today launched the world’s first consumer-level 3D scanning fitness tracker, the Naked 3D Fitness Tracker. The high-tech body monitoring system consists of a full-length 3D scanning mirror, a scale/turntable hybrid, and the Naked mobile app.

While many of us devote one or two hours a week to exercise, the naked truth is that we could probably all be in better shape. Setting ourselves a target weight, ideal body shape, or future running time can be a huge incentive to do exercise, but even these personal targets sometimes fail to provide the adequate motivation. One of the main problems faced by dieters, bodybuilders, and gym-goers around the world is simply not seeing a difference in the mirror after hours of hard work.

Although most of us can understand the pain of seeing the same old figure in the mirror, that lack of noticeable difference can often be a trick of the mind: when we scrutinize ourselves daily, we are less likely to notice the minor changes occurring on a daily basis. Without the assistance of detailed “before and after” evidence, we can’t really be sure of what we looked like yesterday, one week ago, or one month ago. Furthermore, we can only truly observe ourselves from one vantage point, no matter how much we twist and turn in front of the mirror.

Naked Labs, a Silicon Valley fitness innovator, has developed a product which combats both of those exercise problems. The Naked 3D Fitness Tracker consists of a full-length 3D scanning mirror, a scale which doubles up as a stand-on rotating turntable, and a dedicated smartphone app. Users can stand on the turntable and, within 20 seconds of gentle rotation, the mirror is able to take a full-body 3D scan. This 3D body model can then be viewed in detail and from all angles using the Naked mobile app, which also provides an accurate body fat percentage and weight.

Seeing one’s body in 3D can be far more informative than simply looking in the mirror, but users of Naked Labs’ innovative new product can gain even bigger advantages from it with continual use. The clever mobile app, available on iOS and Android, is able to manipulate 3D scan data in various helpful ways over time. Users can, for example, see a heat map which clearly identifies changing muscle/fat areas, and can even generate a time-lapse video which accurately shows the gradually changing figure of the user’s 3D body model. If simply looking in the mirror doesn’t provide evidence of your progress, then a time-lapse video certainly will.

"We believe the only fitness metric worth tracking is progress,” said Farhad Farahbakhshian, chief executive officer and co-founder of Naked Labs. “With the Naked 3D Fitness Tracker, people can immediately see how and where their bodies are changing. The Naked 3D Fitness Tracker is transformative in its ability to motivate people to achieve their health and fitness goals through visualizations of their progress on their 3D body model.”

Although the idea of seeing your own body in such detail might sound scary, trial users of all different body shapes reportedly loved using the 3D scanning product and actually found it extremely encouraging. "One beta user wanted to increase muscle mass, while another was going through a period of extensive weight loss and trying to get healthy,” said Farahbakhshian. “We have even tracked pregnancies month by month with some of our beta users so that they could see how their pregnancy changed their bodies. Our users have loved being able to see their bodies' physical changes.”

Naked Labs worked with a group of technical experts from Intel in order to develop the sophisticated body monitoring software, and the global tech giant has since given its full support to the 3D body monitoring product: ”We are excited to work with the Naked Labs team on their fitness body scanner for the home, utilizing our industry leading Intel processors and RealSense Technology,” commented Josh Walden, senior vice president and general manager of the New Technology Group, Intel Corporation. “This product and application will offer greater insight and awareness to users, helping them check progress on a continuous basis as they work toward healthy body transformation.”

The Naked 3D Fitness Tracker, which can accommodate 6 user profiles per device, is now available for U.S. preorder at a discounted preorder price of $499. Users will be able to download the Naked iOS / Android app for free when the device is shipped to them. Naked Labs has set an estimated shipping date of March 2017.
