Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 6 below.
For those of us who are still reeling from the aftershock of what was surely one of Game of Thrones’ most tragic and revelatory deaths, one dedicated fan has created a both cathartic and tongue in cheek memento that will help us to remember and memorialize the heroic, and simple-minded Hodor.
Whether it was tears, or screams, or silent pain that accompanied Hodor’s untimely but heroic demise, which did not just consist of white walkers tearing at his skin but also revealed the origins of Hodor’s name and his tangled experience with time travel, there is no denying that the tragic death scene was ripe for meme exploitation. What we were pleasantly surprised to find as well, however, was that one California-based fan, Tony Wang, had the ingenious idea of creating a 3D printed Hodor doorstop. Those of you who watch the show will fully understand the significance of this.
Fortunately for all of us, the Hodoor (Hold the Door) Tribute Doorstop is being featured by Wang through a Kickstarter campaign, which in just a week has surpassed its goal of $5,000 (currently the campaign has raised over $63,000!). As explained on the crowdfunding page, Wang and his fellow Game of Thrones loving friends decided to hire a number of designers to create a life-like 6 inch tall Hodoor doorstop. According to the campaign’s updates, a number of prototypes have already been 3D printed, and the team behind the topical doorstops are debating between 3D printing the final products of having them casted.
Of course, creating and selling merchandise based directly off of a show requires some licensing agreements so Wang and his team have applied for licensing rights from HBO. Judging by the campaign’s early success it seems it would be in HBO’s interest to green light the merch, but if for whatever reason they don’t, backers will receive a full refund.
If you want your very own Hodor doorstop, which captures the pain and determination of Hodor’s last moments, the campaign is still running for several more weeks (it expires on June 29th, 2016). The pledge rewards are simple for the campaign: for $37 you will receive one 6 inch Hodor Tribute Doorstop, for $67 you will receive two, for $127 you’ll receive four of them, and for $427 you’ll receive four Hodor doorstops plus a 6 inch 3D printed action figure of yourself which could do well to keep Hodor company in his eternal position of holding the door open.
Whether you’re an avid collector of Game of Thrones memorabilia or just need to keep your doors open with the help of a trusty friend, be sure to check out the 3D printing Hodor doorstop.
