Gambody, the 3D printable model marketplace for gamers, has released an articulated 3D printable model of the Catapult, a robot from the MechWarrior video game. Customers can download the STL files for the model for $29.99.

Since Gambody launched its 3D printing marketplace for gamers early last year, the designers behind the project have come up with some incredible creations, from 3D printed tanks to this phenomenal, 236-piece 3D printed Millennium Falcon—perhaps the greatest Star Wars print we’ve ever come across. Fans of the MechWarrior series of video games can now get a piece of the 3D printed model action, because Gambody has released a highly detailed model of the Catapult, an armored, missile-launching robot from the BattleTech universe.

If you’re not familiar with the BattleTech world, then this ‘Catapult’ might seem a little strange to you. No, it’s not a medieval wooden contraption firing rocks, but a high-tech robo-weapon firing long-range missiles…in the year 2561. To capitalize on the popularity of MechWarrior, the Gambody team has created a beautiful 3D printable replica of the Catapult, with users responding positively to the model since its upload around one month ago. The articulated figurine features movable arms and legs, and can be printed on any desktop 3D printer.

The articulated Catapult figurine consists of two arms, a tech module slot, two weapon module slots, and two consumable module slots. Two missiles are positioned on each side of the robot’s torso, which can rotate 360°. The entire model consists of 27 3D printed parts, which can be printed through any 3D printing program and on any 3D printer. After assembly, the 3D printed model will stand 250 mm tall, while measuring 143 mm deep and 176 mm wide.

As all model-makers know, a big part of the modelling fun comes after assembly, and Gambody user Alexei Bruton has already taken up the challenge of painting the detailed 3D printed Catapult. After 1.5 weeks of printing and four hours of assembly, Bruton took different shades of acrylic dye and applied them carefully to the model, giving the missile-launching warrior a rusted and battle-worn appearance. Bruton’s 3D printed model features various degrees of battle damage, including chipping and impact holes from different kinds of weaponry.

The 3D printable Catapult is available to download for $29.99, with cool add-on parts to be released in the near future.

"To capitalize on the popularity of MechWarrior, the Gambody team has created a beautiful 3D printable replica of the Catapult" You certainly nailed their motivation; literally 'to capitalize', but you seem to have a pretty broad definition of 'created'. It's fairly obvious they ripped the in-game asset straight from MechWarrior Online and threw some edge bevels at it to add panel line details, modeled some other minor greeblies and nurnies, then SLAPPED THEIR OWN LOGO ON IT and put it up for sale. I would be absolutely fascinated to hear how they acquired the rights from PGI to sell this. (Trick question, 90% certain PGI can't even grant those rights.)

Really really cool stuff! Isn't this IP/Copy right protected tough? If it is purely an arts project it's usually OK but it is being sold.
