Ministry of Science and Technology of China recently released "National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 Program)". For the first time 3D printing is listed in this program as one of most important technologies for the future.

According to the program, the government will provide 40 million RMB ($6.5M / €5M) as research funding for developing the key technologies for 3D printing. The research will focus on:

1. Development and Application of laser melting machines for large aerospace parts.

2. Development and Application of large laser sintering equipment for complex parts and mold manufacturing.

3. Development and Application of high temperature and pressure diffusion bonding equipment for material/structure integration design of complex parts.

4. Development and Application of key technology of 3D printing based customization in appliance industry.

As a big manufacturing base China hopes to gain competitive advantage in the world market by taking advantage of 3D printing technology. The grants could stimulate innovation in this challenging area and accelerate the transition from low value added/high labor content manufacturing to high technology manufacturing.
