Valcrow's 3D-printed Obi-Wan Lightsaber, with a glow in the dark PLA blade and illuminated with a 1w blue laser
Last Sunday was international Star Wars Day, an unofficial holiday in May created by fans to honor the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. Designer Valcrow at Redicubricks, obviously a mechwarrior super fan and a starwars super fan with great talent, designed a full scale 3D printable Obi-Wan's lighsaber for Ultimaker. Reddit user Passim printed out this awesome sword on an Ultimaker 2 3D printer. According to Passim, it took totally around 22 hours to print the handle on the printer's standard print-quality setting. See the photos below.
Valcrow has printed another version on his Ultimaker 1, which took around a day at 0.12 mm layer height, according to Valcrow. The 3D model was then aseembled and hand painted. Valcrow then printed a glow-in-the-dark blade and lit it up with a blue laser. It came out really nice! This one is very close to its original version.
Ultimaker released the design on its online printing community Youmagine on May 4th, in honor of Star War day.
If this 3D printed lightsaber is not complex enough for you, you may want to check out Thingiverse user pagaines' Wookiee Scalper. Pagaines even created an animation using Blender to show you how it all goes together.
