Additive Manufacturing system manufacturer EOS has entered into a three-year technical partnership with Williams Grand Prix Engineering and Williams Advanced Engineering to provide Williams with direct and high-level additive manufacturing technologies.The partnership will allow both EOS and Williams to demonstrate the power of industrial 3D printing within the world of Formula One, and to transfer their additive manufacturing processes and innovation into the automotive, defense, aerospace and energy sectors.

As part of this technnical partnership agreement, Williams has installed a new EOSINT P 760 machine, one of EOS’ highly productive, modular plastic additive manufacturing machines with a building volume of 700 x 380 x 580 mm. The EOSINT P 760 offers expanded productivity and increased part sizes for the manufacturing of polymer parts.

In addition to the EOSINT P 760, Williams already owns and operates two other polymer EOS systems. It in standard production processes, the engineering firm uses two EOS polymer materials: Alumide and Carbonmide. The former is predominantly used to create stable parts for functional testing, ranging from engine ancillaries and complete gearbox assemblies for mock-ups, to jigs and fixtures for laminate production. Carbonmide, on the other hand, is used to produce parts on Formula One cars in conjunction with composite laminates where improved strength is required.

Well known within the motorsports world, Williams Grand Prix Engineering is currently racing in Formula 1 as Williams Martini Racing, a British motor racing team and constructor. Alongside high profile names like Ferrari and Renault, Williams is one of a group of just five teams that won every Constructors’ Championship between 1979 and 2008, and every Drivers’ Championship from 1984-2008. Undoubtedly, much of their success comes from the highly advanced technical innovation, engineering, testing and manufacturing of Williams Advanced Engineering.

As part of its mission, Williams Advanced Engineering takes technology originally developed for Formula One and adapts it for commercial applications. It is also dedicated to creating energy efficient performance to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, an area where additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies are expected to excel.
