BigRep, a Berlin based startup for full scale 3D printing, has announced this week that it has successfully received its first round of seed financing.
New investors include the KfW Development Bank via its "ERP Fund Program" and an experienced group of Business Angels, among them Dr. Christian Reitberger (renowned VC investor), Johannes von Borries (founder of Nanda Technologies) and Dr. Alexander Ey (founder of Billsafe).
"BigRep's affordable large-format printers and customer solutions such as BigRep Industrial Cloud Printing, surges forth to a new dimension in this promising technology." said René Gurka, Chief Executive Officer of BigRep. "Since we started our business in the beginning of 2014, we have been literally flooded with requests and inquiries. Our new shareholders not only support us with capital, but more importantly they provide knowledge to foster the expansion of our R&D, production and sales."
BigRep introduced their latest 3D printer BigRep One.2 at EuroMold 2014 in Frankfurt last week. While consumer 3D printers are often limited to creating hand-sized objects, BigRep wanted to create an affordable 3D printer that can build furniture in full size. BigRep unveiled its first product, BigRep ONE 3D printer in February 2014. With a working volume of 1060 x 1070 x 1105 mm, 1.3 cubic meters (45 inches x 39 inches x 47 inches, 46 cubic feet), BigRep ONE can fabricate objects on a 1:1 scale, making it one of largest commercially available fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer in the world. The BigRep ONE.2, apparently a version 2 of the device, features a working volume of 1100 x 1067 x 1097 mm (1.3 m³).
The funding will allow the company to further develop its 3D printing ecosystem which consists of large-format 3D printer and cloud printing services. The company currently has 27 employees. Its systems will allow professional users like architects, designers and artists to develop original chairs, tables, prototypes or large replacement parts that could be produced locally. Their customers also include some of corporates seeking partnerships for an efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes.
