HIPS is a High Impact Polystyrene filament and very similar to ABS. It has an interesting property that makes it particularly well suited as a support material. If you have a dual extruder, you can print with ABS and HIPS to create structures impossible to make without support. HIPS is soluble in Limonene, and can easily be dissolved by placing your print in Limonene.
Amsterdam-based Formfutura launches its new EasyFil HIPS today, aiming to 'bring a specialty filament like HIPS to the ordinary.' "At Formfutura we believe that EasyFil HIPS can compete with PLA and ABS as a primary 3D printing material." notes the company.
HIPS is as easy to print with as ABS but is much less likely to warp. It has a similar strength and stiffness profile to ABS which makes it an ideal material for printing in conjunction with ABS. The new EasyFil HIPS filament is slightly softer and more flexible and features an excellent thermal stability, making it an "easy to print" 3D printer filament, a competitor for mass mainstream 3D printing materials.
Formfutura will start offering EasyFil HIPS in the following 5 colours: Black, White, Red, Blue and Grey, with more to be released soon.
With EasyFil HIPS you will be able to 3D print objects with a matt finish. The objects can then be sanded, primed and painted using acrylic. You can also give your EasyFil HIPS printed object an acetone vapor smoothing treatment which will lead to a really smooth and shiny surface.
EasyFil HIPS is compatible with all common desktop 3D printers and prints best with the bed at 90-110°C and the extrusion temp around 235°C.
The filament is wrapped on a transparent ABS plastic spool and available in both 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm formats. Each 0.75 kg spool is priced at €28.95.
