Nissan has teamed up with Lucasfilm for their newest automotive model, the 2017 Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition. It’s “the closest you’ll ever get to sitting in the cockpit of a starfighter,” say Nissan representatives.
The limited edition vehicle boasts plenty of Star Wars inspired features. Exclusive badging on the front row doors, a powered panoramic “moonroof,” and a choice between Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire logo decals are some of the key focal points that deserve mention. But what will really get Star Wars fans excited is the limited edition Death Trooper replica helmet, a special perk available only to owners of the Nissan Rogue One.
For those behind on the franchise, the Death Trooper helmet was introduced in the latest Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, where it was worn by an elite unit of Stormtroopers known as the Death Troopers.
Staunch, glimmering, and incredibly detailed, the replica helmets look and feel exactly like the real thing. Nissan is confident that wearing one is like entering a world far, far away, but without leaving the comfort of the driver’s seat.
The Death Trooper replica helmets were made by 3D Systems Gentle Giant studios in Burbank, CA, a frequent collaborator with Lucasfilm on their props, digital assets, and collectibles. With the Nissan collaboration in place, 3D Systems Gentle Giant was tasked with manufacturing and delivering over 5,400 replica helmets in only 3 months.
The Burbank studio artists were provided with photographs and digital scan data of the original Star Wars costume to guide them. Digital modelers began sculpting the 3D model from the ground up, which could then be divided into separate pieces for effective manufacturing.
Once completed, the helmet files were shipped to Gentle Giant’s 3D printing facility, where a ProX 800 Stereolithography (SLA) printer began creating the first helmet, with 15” x 11.5” x 10” as the final dimensions.
Once the SLA prototype helmet received the official stamp of approval, Gentle Giant could get to work on creating the master fiberglass production molds. These molds formed the basis of the low volume production run that would make up Nissan’s quota, complete with high-quality hand finishing.
The highly exclusive Gentle Giant created Death Trooper replica helmet is only available with purchase of the Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition, which is now retailing for about $30,000 USD.
Nissan says a total of only 5,400 units will be sold, but “unlike the Death Star, when these are gone, [they] won’t be building them again.”
