3D printing specialist Aurora Labs has signed a deal with the University of Western Australia and Royal Perth Hospital to explore use of 3D printing to create human medical implants.
Under the collaboration agreement, the partners will develop designs, specifications and parameters for 3D printing of human medical implants using Aurora’s S-Titanium Pro Small Format Printer. The results will then serve as an instructional guide for future 3D printing of titanium medical implants.
Aurora will provide one 3D printer and the metallic consumable powders free of charge for this six-month project. It will also supply maintenance and training of staff if needed to provide advice and assistance on metal printing and use of the printer.
The University of Western Australia will investigate implant characteristics suitable for tissue ingrowth and assess materials that will determine the best size and distribution for consistent printing results.
The Royal Perth Hospital will provide appropriate designs of craniology plates for printing for the project and consult on the cranioplasty application after printing.
The partners will apply for a $26,000 Innovation Connections grant from the Australian Trade and Investment Commission to help cover costs.
