Time to deck the halls and trim the tree, and why not to decorate for the holidays with custom-designed and 3D printed holiday ornaments that you design and 3D print?
MakerBot is bringing together 3D printing and interior decorating and has launched a contest for designs of 3D-printed holiday ornaments.
MakerBot and its Thingiverse has teamed up with the Peabody Award-winning public radio show Studio 360, hosted by cultural critic and author Kurt Andersen, to co-sponsor a Thingiverse Holiday Ornament Challenge.
This time, there's an extra-special prize: If the Grand Prize winner of the Holiday Ornament Challenge is in the U.S., he or she will receive a travel voucher for up to $1000 to travel to New York to join MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis at "Science Fair: Studio 360 in 3D," a live event hosted by Kurt Andersen at WNYC's Greene Space in New York on December 17, 2013. Winners outside of the US can participate in the show via Skype.
In addition a total of ten winners will each receive one spool of a MakerBot PLA Filament and a Thingiverse t-shirt, and have their designs featured on Thingiverse and in MakerBot retail stores.
"Ornaments are always fun to create and often have special meaning to individuals and families, so it will be awesome to create some favorite holiday ornaments or design new ones that can be shared on Thingiverse and 3D printed to give to family and friends." said Pettis.
So get creative and use your favorite holiday tradition as inspiration or create a new ornament by designing something fun and festive. Submit your design to Thingiverse, and tag it #MakerBotOrnaments, from now and December 2, 2013.
