Giant monsters from outer space have found a way to teleport through our 3D printers and will destroy everything in sight if they succeed. The only way to stop them is to join 3DKitBash’s team intergalactic heroes and designate your 3D printer as a ‘landing zone’ for monsters so that you can annihilate them by any means necessary. The end is near…are you game?
Quin, NiQ and their team of defendors
Over the past few years, 3DKitbash has spun an intergalactic tale full of lovable and 3D printable characters such as Quin and her brother NiQ from the planet Filamento. The premium articulated 3D models are easily printed without the need for support structures or glue, and their compelling back-stories and personalities make it easy and fun to dive into their universe for role-playing games and good-old fashioned fun. Now, the 3DKitbash team has found a way to incorporate Kickstarter, social media, and 3D printers to get players directly involved in the next chapter of Quin’s Saga like never before.
One of the three alien monster skulls
According to the mythology, Quin invented teleportation through 3D printers, and came to Earth to learn as much as possible. She later invited her brother, NiQ and her articulated and pose-able pet T-Rex, Boon. However, the news has come that three gigantic monsters discovered her teleportation secret, and are now on their way to destroy our planet. Since the monsters are determined the find the largest format 3D printer on Eart and teleport at max scale, the only way to stop them is to disrupt the monsters’ teleportation signals and have them print on hundreds of desktop 3D printers all over the world—that’s where you come in.
By backing the Kickstarter campaign, makers from all over the world agree to designate their 3D printers as ‘ground-zero’ for the monster war. Depending on how much you pledge, you can receive the STL files for one, two or all three monsters, print them and then destroy.
Quin and RukiBot
As 3DKitbash assures, “they have also been engineered by 3D printing master minds for the easiest printing experience possible” (a.k.a. no supports or glue, just snap them together directly off the print bed.) Backers at the two highest levels will also receive backup in the form of Boon and RukiBot, a robot that Quin recently inveted to help secure the planet.
Unlike most 3D printing-related Kickstarters, where backers either receive a specific product or service, by pledging 3DKitbash users get to be a part of the experience and participate in the world-wide game. “It's fun to see supporters print the characters and post pictures of them participating in the story online using #QuinSaga. They become part of this ongoing mythos that we're all creating together,” said co-founder, Quincy Robinson.
Fans and participants are already hard at work 3D printing RukiBot army squads and weapons, and posting their pictures across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with reports such as “South Africa secure!” Honolulu secure!” and “London secure!” They can also follow the action and tell their side of the story with the hashtag #QuinSaga.
We love seeing projects like this that are not just about using 3D printing to get to a prototype or end-product, but that are more about participation and originality, spreading enthusiasm and creativity across the entire maker community. Not only is it fun and a throw-back to cult-classic story-based games, their Kickstarter strategy ensures that, if successful, they will be able to continue developing the story, adding even more crazy twists, dangerous villains, and heroic rescues—not to mention crafting more well-engineered, articulated, 3D printable and support-free characters. They are hoping to raise $4,000 by October 31st, and if you want to keep our planet intact, we’d suggest you sign up now.
