Colorado-based Frustum, a developer of functional generative design and topology optimization software, has announced that, as part of the Siemens’ PLM Solution Partner Program, it will be offering its innovative design generator tools through Siemens’ NX software. Frustum’s new integrated module will allow engineers and designers to more efficiently optimize topologies for CAD-designed parts, which in turn could allow for the creation of more advanced and higher-quality 3D printed parts.

Generative design is a form of technology that is capable of automatically creating a number of designs based on a given set of parameters (material, function, weight, etc.). Once design are generates, users can then select a preferred one before tweaking it to perfection. By essentially removing the manual design step, generative design software offers a number of benefits, including significant time reduction. Frustum’s topology optimization software fits into this category, but is also equipped to automate a part’s weight and material reduction, while still maintaining its structural integrity.

By combining Frustum’s topology optimization with Siemens’ latest release of its NX CAD software (which itself uses convergent modeling), users will have the benefit of generating optimized designs that can be easily edited and prepared for additive manufacturing.

Using Siemens’ new NX CAD software, industrial designers and engineers will reportedly be able to consider and integrate a number of factors into a part’s design, including performance, structural strength, weight, in record time. That is, 3D printable parts can be optimized and even validated before they are sent to the printer. This in turn, will help to cut back on costs from part redesign, supports, and even post-processing.

Frustum has been a part of Siemens’ next47 partner program, which supports startups with innovative tech solutions, as well as its Frontier program, which is specifically geared to supporting projects in the fields of 3D printing, robotics, and augmented/virtual reality.
