Belgian 3D printing company Materialise and Massachusetts-based software firm PTC have announced a partnership to expand upon the latter’s Creo computer-aided design (CAD) software suite. Together, the companies are hoping to improve and simplify the 3D printing adoption process for businesses and manufacturers.

“Our collaboration with PTC will bring improved 3D printing capabilities to PTC’s CAD software and make it easier for manufacturers to integrate 3D printing into their operations,” commented Stefaan Motte, Vice President and General Manager of Materialise Software. “This collaboration with PTC will expand access to 3D printing and help engineers and designers think in terms of additive, rather than traditional manufacturing for rapid product design and development.”

In other words, the partnership will see an increase in additive manufacturing-related tools in PTC’s Creo software suite to improve the integration of 3D printing in the overall product lifecycle management system.

The 3D printing solution forged through Materialise and PTC’s agreement will reportedly be powered by Materialise’s Build Processor, which will enable PTC Creo users to benefit from a “seamless connection” between PTC’s software and 3D printers with a Materialise Build Processor.

Additionally, the software collaboration will be compatible with metal 3D printing technologies and will include Materialise’s support generation technology. This feature will provide users with improved control and freedom for the design of metal support structures.

“As 3D printing becomes a more prominent part of the manufacturing toolkit, we are working with Materialise to create robust support for the technology in Creo,” added Brian Thompson, senior vice president and general manager of PTC’s CAD division. "Together with Materialise, we will bridge the gap between CAD design software and the 3D printing machines."
