UK's electronics retailer Maplin has invested £100,000 in a new 1,000sq ft store at Glasgow Airport. The store will open on 1 March 2014 and feature tablet accessories, phone accessories and 3D printers.
The new model is designed to encourage customer to browse in the store whilst they wait for their flight, to peruse products at their leisure and consider potential purchases. Customers will also be able to spend time at a play table, featuring fun products such as Maplin's Raspberry Pi and a 3D printer. The store's in-store experts will provide advice on all aspects of technology and electronics.
The Rotherham-based Maplin was launched in 1972 and now there are more than 200 Maplin stores across the UK and Ireland including 14 in Scotland.
Maplin announced in July 2013 that it would start selling the first 3D printer for home use in the UK, the Velleman K8200 for £700. The Velleman K8200 is a 3D printer kit that you will have to assemble the printer yourself.
"We selected this model primarily because it offers high performance printing at an affordable price, making it accessible to our customers. In addition, it requires assembly before use, which fits with the 'build it yourself' ethos so central to Maplin's heritage." said Maplin Commercial director Oliver Meakin.
Recently Maplin has also added the Up! 2 Plus 3D Printer (£1619.99) to its stores. The Up! 2 Plus is a small format 3D printer that works straight out of the box and has automatic calibration.
John Cleland, CEO at Maplin, said: "With 7.4m passengers passing through Glasgow Airport last year, it's evident this is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of the Maplin brand." Furthermore, the store will also offer a click-and-collect service enabling travellers returning to Glasgow to pick up orders, or get them delivered to their homes.
