Norwegian metal 3D printing pioneer Norsk Titanium AS has entered into a strategic, long-term supply chain services agreement with Precision Holdings, a Connecticut-based portfolio company. The partnership will further support the worldwide production and distribution of Norsk’s patented Rapid Plasma Deposition metal additive manufacturing technology, a proven method for producing aerospace-grade titanium components.

Norsk Titanium has become a leading provider of aerospace 3D printing technology, and has developed two proprietary processes in this rapidly growing field. Using its patented Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) and plasma arc Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) additive manufacturing technologies, Norsk can transform titanium wire into complex components at 50-70% less cost and with 75% reduced time to market than comparable technologies.

In tests on 1,300 3D printed aircraft samples, Norsk’s RPD 3D printed titanium parts were found to meet the most demanding aerospace requirements, and it has been approved to begin delivering critical end-use 3D printed parts to the world’s premier aerospace and defence companies in 2016.

In 2015, New York State invested $125 million through a private-public partnership with Norsk Titanium to build a first-of-its-kind industrial-scale 3D printing facility in Plattsburgh, New York. Norsk Titanium and Alcoa also signed a parternship to combine their metal 3D printing expertise for a joint 3D printing and industrial cooperation program.

Now, Norsk seems keen to further expand its aerospace 3D printing technology throughout the United States, and eventually, worldwide.

Under the terms of the strategic partnership, Precision Holdings will provide support in the form of customer service development in the U.S. in accordance with “Norsk Titanium’s global expansion plans.”

“We are delighted to announce this broad cooperation with Precision Holdings,” said Warren M. Boley, Jr., CEO of Norsk Titanium. “As we drive our RPD technology across new markets and customer applications, Precision Holdings is an ideal downstream operations partner and collaborator in our newly-launched integrated supply chain network.”

Precision Holdings is a portfolio company of Insight Equity Holdings LLC, a private equity firm based in Texas. Precision Holdings offers high quality contract machining, fabrication, assembly, and metal 3D printing services for the aerospace, defense, power generation, and oil & gas industries, making it an ideal American partner for Norsk Titanium.

With more than 300,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space in Windsor, Connecticut, Precision Holdings has the capacity to produce a full range of rapid prototypes and full-scale industrial components, from large industrial gas turbines to small, highly complex 3D printed parts.

“We are very excited about our commercial agreement with Norsk Titanium," said Victor Vescovo, chairman of Precision Holdings. "As industry veterans in metal additive manufacturing and high-precision machining, we see enormous potential for Norsk's Rapid Plasma Deposition technology not just in titanium and aircraft parts, but throughout a broader spectrum of other materials and industries in the future."
