Statistical Studies of Peer Production completed the second survey on the 3D printing community. This year they had 344 people respond to their survey (358 in 2012). In 2013 more people with Master Degrees participated the survey. "The percentage of 4-year college degree and Master's degree is 67%, last year it was 51%."

Some interesting results are:

1. Which year did you use 3D printing / printer the first time?

The amount of 3D Printers/Printing started rising around 2005-2006 and the largest concentration is in year 2011~2012.

2. Most commonly used 3D printers

3. Your favourite 3D Printing Services

Shapeways is still most used 3D printing service. i.Materialise has taken the second position.

4. Motivation to use 3D printing services

Most people claim that they use 3D printing services to get professional quality printings. Other prominent factors are "to make money by selling models", "to test how these services work", "services enable 3D model distribution easily" etc.

A new question about motivation to use 3D printing services were added in the 2013 survey.

The two clearly most prominent factors are "fun" and "leaning new skills", followed by the urge to share and for personal expression. These, as well as the strong component of disagreement to "because of money", seem to suggest both "knowledge-enriching" and "group-enriching" motivations (in the classification by [Aalbers], see also [Mikkonen]).

The full survey is available online from the Journal of Peer Production.

Extremely bias survey. Not only was this presented to primarily Shapeways users but it was specifically not promoted to users of competitor sites. It is ridiculous to think multi-billion dollar RP supplier RedEye who has existed for over 8 years has a smaller piece of the pie than newbie Shapeways.
