Every year for the past 30 years, America's PNC Bank calculates its Christmas Price Index, the current price of each of the gifts from the classic carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas."
The PNC Christmas Price Index is similar to the Consumer Price Index, which measures changes in prices of goods and services like housing, food, clothing, transportation and more that reflect the spending habits of the average American. It is a fun way to measure consumer spending and trends in the economy, and also a good method for kids to learn basic economic principles like inflation and supply and demand.
This year the bank's advertising Agency Deutsch New York has created an online "Gift Maker" campaign that brings this playful financial report to life in a modern, unexpected way. Deutsch created a set of customizable 3D-printed toys based on the twelve gifts in the song as a modern toy collection. the 'Gift Maker' campaign is quite good fun, it lets people build toys in the online workshop by selecting various heads, legs, arms, bodies and accessories. When you are done creating your character, PNC calculates the total cost of what your selection would be in 2013, as well as how much it has gone up or down since 2012. The you can enter for the chance to receive your 3D printed toy creation.
Deutsch New York works with partners on various parts of the project. Invisible Creature, a small design studio, helped design the 12 toys and multiple interchangeable parts for each character – over 100 pieces in total. MediaMonks, a digital production company, provided 3D modeling, design and development. And 3D Printer Experience will print the toys on their 20 MakerBot 3D Printers over the next few weeks.
"The whole effort, in the end, is about making finances a whole lot of fun," said Kerry Keenan, Chief Creative Officer at Deutsch NY.
The campaign begins on December 2 and ends on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. ET. For 12 days, PNC will select 24 user-submitted designs per day at random and 3D print and mail them to their creators, so they arrive in time for the holidays. So hurry, there are only 8 days left, the more gifts you build, the more chances you have to win. Read more about that here.
