Last week Shapeways announced Elasto Plastic, a flexible 3D printed material, and black is the first color available.

This animation of Squishy SpringBall by Opresco shows how flexible the material is. But Shapeways explains it is still an experimental material, so it also has a rough, grainy surface texture. Shapeways provides some design rules in case you plan to use this new material in your design, such as:

  • Minimum wall & detail: 1.5mm
  • Minimum clearance: 1.5mm
  • Minimum hole size for hollow parts: 6.5mm (in diameter)

The trial period is until Jul.20, 2012 and the price is $2.00 per cubic centimeter with a $3.00 handling fee.

"There is still a lot to learn," Shapeways Product Manager Nancy Liang, "It's not perfect yet, but it is innovative, and very exciting stuff to work with." - Wired
